The View Up-Arrow and Left-Arrow

In Outline, Chart, Map and Treemap views there is a large black arrow in the bottom left corner; it points upwards in Map and Treemap views and left in Outline and Chart view. The purpose of the arrow is to allow the user to navigate 'up' one level of the 'virtual outline' of the document. At the top (cover/root) level the arrow is greyed out because it is not possible to navigate upwards any further.

Navigation 'downwards' depends on the view type:
